Physical Education

Intent

Southwark Park Primary School Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim. We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Southwark Park Primary School, not only through the sporting skills taught, but also through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

Implementation

PE at Southwark Park Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure. The long-term plan sets out the PE units taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Children are provided with an opportunity to attend five after school sport clubs across four evenings per week.

We invite the children to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This inclusive approach endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and the children actively enjoy participating. Southwark Park Primary has children placed in Sport Houses: Blue, Green, Orange and Purple. We believe this develops the students' belief that they can be a valued team member and creates a stronger, more positive culture within the school surrounding PE. We hold whole school House competitions throughout the year such as a Fun Run, Skipathon and Sports Day.

We have very strong links with Millwall Community Trust who provide football coaching and opportunities for children to meet players from both male and female first-class teams who visit the school. We also work with ProTouchSA and Dance Focus. Both of these organisations provide out of hours clubs that many of our children attend. Children participate in workshops covering a variety of sports throughout the year. For example, dance, cross-country, and skipping provide the children with an opportunity to develop, improve their fitness and to try something new. Through our membership of the PESSN we are able to provide high quality CPD for all teachers, intra school events and inter school events. They provided us with clear and deliverable lesson plans and videos to ensure quality first teaching.

Active travel is encouraged and we encourage Walk and Cycle to School day as well as general encouragement throughout the year. Cycle Confident training is available to children from years 3 – 6. Children in Year 3 swim once a week for the academic year producing confident swimmers. We have launched the Daily Mile, to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day.

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills to enjoy, succeed and develop a love for physical activity and sport. We teach them that physical activity has huge benefits not just for our physical health, but for our mental well-being as well. We hope the children will grow up to lead happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE and our Health and Wellbeing provision.
